Karen Schex,
As someone in the nutrition field, I was curious to read this book and expand my knowledge。I was extremely disappointed in Toxic Superfoods。 I think to say that vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, and seeds are 'toxic' is careless。 A skilled practitioner should consider each client's bio-individual needs/health concerns。My concern is the layperson will read this book and stop eating foods that provide our bodies with crucial nutrients。 There was not enough scientific studies to back her claims for As someone in the nutrition field, I was curious to read this book and expand my knowledge。I was extremely disappointed in Toxic Superfoods。 I think to say that vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, and seeds are 'toxic' is careless。 A skilled practitioner should consider each client's bio-individual needs/health concerns。My concern is the layperson will read this book and stop eating foods that provide our bodies with crucial nutrients。 There was not enough scientific studies to back her claims for me to give this book credibility。Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC of this book。 。。。more
Karen Thompson,
I read this on digital and need a physical copy that I carry around。 The foods that I have found to be toxic has really shed a light on my health。
Marty Wilson,
I truly do not know where these bad reviews are coming from。 The book has NOT been released as of yet! How did they get 'advanced copies' of the book? They clearly are not 'friends' of the concepts presented。 I, as well, have not read the full book as it will not be released until December 2022。 It's now 10/8/2022。 What I CAN without a doubt say is that Norton's concepts have saved my life。 I cut out some of the more aggressive oxalate foods and have received great benefits from doing this。 I ha I truly do not know where these bad reviews are coming from。 The book has NOT been released as of yet! How did they get 'advanced copies' of the book? They clearly are not 'friends' of the concepts presented。 I, as well, have not read the full book as it will not be released until December 2022。 It's now 10/8/2022。 What I CAN without a doubt say is that Norton's concepts have saved my life。 I cut out some of the more aggressive oxalate foods and have received great benefits from doing this。 I had severe arthritic pain (and some changes in the appearance of some joints) when I found her many suggestions。 Some of her work is not necessarily that HUGELY novel - doctors have, for years, suggested low oxalate diets for those who suffer from kidney stones。 What she also does is explain why the focus on calcium, as opposed to oxalates in the medical field (in regards to kidney stones), is lacking。 I also experienced less brain fog and I can GUARANTEE without a shadow of a doubt that when I 'fall off the wagon' and eat higher oxalate foods in any larger amount, I regain the problematic pains from prior to understanding Sally's concepts。 That being said, she clearly states that the idea is NOT to cut out all oxalates from one's diet。 Cutting back at an amount that serves you, is what works。 I can eat a few of the foods here and there without a problem。 She is particularly helpful in explaining strategies for recovering from oxalate damage。 Also, her recommendations come from science and the numbers don't lie。 If the foods are high in oxalates (as found in nutritional charts), then they are high in oxalates。 She didn't make the rules of nature! She's simply reporting the sad truth that oxalates are very problematic for humans in larger than normal quantities; she then shares ideas on how to mitigate the deleterious effects of eating high amounts of oxalates and where to find them in today's current processed and even natural foods。 I can speak extensively on this not only because I've gained greatly by adopting her ideas, but also via meeting her。 She is a force of nature。 Her lively wit, massive amount of energy, engaging smile, and scientific mind all impact her ability to share with the world what she has discovered。 Adding to the hours I've spent with her, I have also gleaned information from watching a vast amount of interviews with her on YouTube, by accessing clear and helpful information on her website, and by reading other people's experiences and ideas in a Facebook Oxalate Group。 She is always highly respected even in circles that are moderated by other oxalate experts。 And, finally! Do not be naive about this topic。 There are many people who are not happy with the fact that Sally has pointed out that some vegetables while appearing to be 'superfoods,' are actually very bad for us。 The 'plant-based' movement really, really doesn't want to hear any shade cast on their foods。 A lot of people have a lot of money to lose if certain foods are consumed less often。 Remember, I am passionate about this because as I type my fingers are not hurting。 I can make a fist with my right hand whereas before I could not close it that far。 My grip was decimated。 I was awakened at night by pains in my knees and legs。 The quality of my life has massively improved because Sally has the energy and knowledge to get this vital information out there。 I've pre-ordered the book and if you have a moment to check out one or two of the YouTube interviews of her or check out her website, I suspect you might find that pre-ordering it will be a good idea for you as well。 。。。more
Ro Scott,
Having gout and joint pain issues, I needed this book to learn how to safely lower my oxalate levels。 I learned which foods were high in oxalates (my problem was excess nuts, almonds, orgain collagen with amino acids, tea and chocolate。 I had no idea those were all high in oxalates), how to remove excessive oxalates from the body safely, ways to change my diet and look for high oxalate foods and limit them, and some vitamin and supplement suggestions。 This book has been a lifesaver。 Look up Sall Having gout and joint pain issues, I needed this book to learn how to safely lower my oxalate levels。 I learned which foods were high in oxalates (my problem was excess nuts, almonds, orgain collagen with amino acids, tea and chocolate。 I had no idea those were all high in oxalates), how to remove excessive oxalates from the body safely, ways to change my diet and look for high oxalate foods and limit them, and some vitamin and supplement suggestions。 This book has been a lifesaver。 Look up Sally Norton on google, she has a really good website too。 。。。more
Alicia Bayer,
Sorry, but this book was a big miss for me。 I actually enjoy reading books that challenge my beliefs much of the time and some have changed my mind over the years。 The Case for Keto was one such book, after I completely disapproved of keto diets for years。 So I was actually looking forward to reading this and seeing if I needed to rethink some of my food choices。 It definitely did not change my mind about anything。Norton is a nutritionist who uses a lot of personal anecdotes from herself and her Sorry, but this book was a big miss for me。 I actually enjoy reading books that challenge my beliefs much of the time and some have changed my mind over the years。 The Case for Keto was one such book, after I completely disapproved of keto diets for years。 So I was actually looking forward to reading this and seeing if I needed to rethink some of my food choices。 It definitely did not change my mind about anything。Norton is a nutritionist who uses a lot of personal anecdotes from herself and her patients to try to prove that oxalates in foods are very dangerous。 She believes that most fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts and seeds are actually really harmful。 She gives almost no science to back this up, and she fills the book with scary fearmongering。 I was actually dumbfounded at how little science is in this book。 It's just missing。 She has charts of oxalates and quotes from things like books in the 19th century and random books in the 1980's。 She gives case studies of her own patients who supposedly cured all kinds of pains and conditions from giving up most fruits and vegetables, but there's no scientific basis to it。 Maybe these people had other deficiencies from years of eating fad diets in the opposite direction that were lacking in other things。 Maybe they had specific allergies。 Who knows, because it's all just random people she says she helped。 A surprising amount of her "proof" is stuff like interviews from Liam Hemsworth telling Men's Health Magazine that he ended up in the hospital a few years into his vegan diet。 I completely believe that he probably had some serious issues related to his diet that caught up with him。 I am not at all convinced that it was because of oxalates。The book was just a slog for me。 I read it all to be able to review it fairly, but it did not convince me of anything other than the importance of completely vetting your nutritionist。I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review。 。。。more
Fancy,
What a bizarre book。 Crazy amounts of scaremongering based on a few cherry-picked studies, lots of anecdotes, and quotes from really old sources like books from the 1800s。 Cliff notes version is that most fruits, vegetables, beans and nuts are terrible for you。 Eat stuff like meat, dairy, rice and gluten。 If you still feel awful, even for years, it’s from those terrible oxylates leaving your body from when you used to eat “toxic” foods like chocolate, tea, almonds, beets, quinoa, sweet potatoes, What a bizarre book。 Crazy amounts of scaremongering based on a few cherry-picked studies, lots of anecdotes, and quotes from really old sources like books from the 1800s。 Cliff notes version is that most fruits, vegetables, beans and nuts are terrible for you。 Eat stuff like meat, dairy, rice and gluten。 If you still feel awful, even for years, it’s from those terrible oxylates leaving your body from when you used to eat “toxic” foods like chocolate, tea, almonds, beets, quinoa, sweet potatoes, raspberries, spinach and black beans。 Everything wrong with you— ever— is because you ate oxylates。 Smoothies will kill you。 Follow this incredibly restrictive list of good and bad foods the rest of your life and eventually every medical problem you have will disappear — but you might feel terrible for months or years first。 Just trust her and follow her restrictive diet that goes against almost all medical advice anyway。 No thanks。 Thanks to the publisher and Net Galley for an advanced review copy。 。。。more
Donna,
I selected this book based on its provocative title alone。 Prior to cracking its cover, I knew nothing about the author and very little about oxalates。I may not be the target audience (I am not currently dealing with ailments or looking for changes to my present diet)。 I also did not become an instant believer in everything espoused。 Still, I did find this book to be interesting。 It caused me to reexamine dietary beliefs that I have long taken for granted。 It also motivated me to research more a I selected this book based on its provocative title alone。 Prior to cracking its cover, I knew nothing about the author and very little about oxalates。I may not be the target audience (I am not currently dealing with ailments or looking for changes to my present diet)。 I also did not become an instant believer in everything espoused。 Still, I did find this book to be interesting。 It caused me to reexamine dietary beliefs that I have long taken for granted。 It also motivated me to research more about oxalates so that I better understand the research surrounding them。Toxic Superfoods is scheduled for release on December 27, 2022。 Thank you to Rosedale Books, Sally Norton and Netgalley for granting me an Advanced Readers Copy。 。。。more
